I honestly can't believe how well it went. Seriously.
i so glad i slimmed the speech down and distilled it to 20 minutes. i think everyone was fully engaged in conversation for another 40 minutes and towards the end we brainstormed specific solutions on campus, some things were ongoing like mentioning AIDS or other global issues in class: getting professors to talk more about the issues as part of the curricula. sounds like some seniors have been doing thesis projects on this material and i thought it would be cool to have them do little presentations of their papers to other students. we talked about the need for more grassroots efforts. i suggested get popular students involved. ask GQ to mention it during their concert tonight...sports teams...something like that. the AIDS ribbon wasn't quite finished and maybe an article could go out to talk about engagement in world issues...
there were about 18 people total...nice cross-section including faculty, administrators and diverse students: two from botswana and of course i asked them to talk about life and AIDS in Africa to make it less hypothetical and more real. it was tremendously fulfilling
there's a Public Health Alliance run by Chanel? and Sarah? and they're really cool...i probably just totally butchered their names...i'm so bad with names, sorry...except for marcela, i won't forget: "one 'l'". i want to get the pictures...maybe i can post them here.
so i met with the leaders of the Alliance, and Amanda and Marcela afterwards for lunch. i'm so proud of Kareem and the work he's doing. i love the students at Williams. i feel very happy to be in the world.
i'll wrap the day by talking with LGBTQ students. again, i think nobody will come, but we'll see. you never know. if they don't, Kareem and i can continue chatting, and that's fine.
work is work...i caught up on emails and voicemails...this is much more important for today. but i am bummed that i missed our team lunch and all the cool stuff that our office is doing...there were only about FIVE emails asking us to come to a symposium today...aargh...
it feels good to be doing SOMETHING...and to do it out of the passion of my heart around this seemingly impossibly big global thing...one one coco fill basket, as we say in Jamaica.
